great idea I do this for a several friends. I enclose mine in a small gift bag with nice chocs.

I'd prefer a gift card, and they always seem to be well received when I give them too. And it's more of a surprise, if someone asks you what cd you want you know what you're getting, but not if they just get you the HMV voucher.

Nothing says I Love You better than a gift card. I'd almost always rather get a gift card than anything else!

That is a tricky question. It all depends on the individual. I know some people who love them and others think it's a cheezy way out of actually getting a gift. So you'll have to see on a case by case basis.

I'd rather have a gift card then a normal gift any day especially if the person who's giving me the gift doesn't really know me....But yeah i think its better just make sure you know what kind of gift card to give them.
